Adventurer / Landholder / Surveyor
Born: 2 September 1689, Darby, Pennsylvania
Died: September 1745, Columbia, Pennsylvania
Samuel Blunston, son of John and Sarah (Bickerstaffe) Blunston, was married to Sarah Bilton Blunston. His father, John, and another Quaker, immigrated from Derbyshire, England on October 27, 1682 on the ship ‘Welcome’ along with William Penn. Samuel eventually became an agent for the Penn family.
It was through his influence that the area west of the Susquehanna River was named Hellam. It was Samuel’s job to grant permits for land to settlers who located in that area.
Samuel and Sarah had no children. Samuel, John Wright, and Robert Barber were the first landholders in present day Columbia having come to the Susquehanna in the fall of 1726 from Darby, Chester County, Pennsylvania. On June 4, 1718, he had married Mrs. Sarah Bilton, a wealthy widow of Philadelphia. Samuel was a surveyor. In 1729, when Chester and Lancaster County were divided, he was appointed Register-General of Wills, and Register of the County. He also served as Justice-of-the-Peace and Prothonotary at various times. Until the erection of the courthouse in Lancaster, the work of these several offices was carried out in a small office in his mansion (Belmont, near Second and Chestnut Streets). He was elected to the General Assembly in 1732, 1741, 1742 and 1744. At his death in 1745, he left no issue, and gave his valued friend, Susannah Wright, a life interest in his large estate for the remainder of her life.
At his death in 1745, and because the couple did not have any children, Samuel’s estate was willed to Susanna Wright, the daughter of his friend John Wright who operated the ferry at Columbia, Pennsylvania, where many settlers crossed the Susquehanna River instead of using John Harris’ ferry.
