catherine ross claiborne

Daughter of Declaration of Independence Signatory

Born: 1790, Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Died: 1850, Columbia, Pennsylvania

Catherine Ross Claiborne was the daughter of Brig. Colonel George Ross, signer of the Declaration of Independence and niece of James Wilson and George Reed, also signers of the Declaration of Independence. Her uncle, General Thompson was with the expedition to Canada with Montgomery and taken prisoner there. John Ross, Catherine’s uncle, married Elizabeth Griscom—we know her today as ‘Betsy Ross.’

Catherine’s husband, Richard Claiborne, was a founding member of the Society of the Cincinnati and, later, 1st lieutenant in the Continental Artillery. In November 1777, he was promoted to Major, assigned to Gen. Nathanael Greene as his aide-de-camp.

Their children were Guilford Green Claiborne and Henrietta Virginia Claiborne, who married Preston Billings Elder, of Pennsylvania.

Letters were found with reactions to the death at sea of James Ross, Catherine’s brother. One written by John Sturtevant from New York, March 1806 addressed to Frederick Kuhn of Lancaster said, “Your nephew, Captain Ross, supported a very good character and discharged his duties with fidelity and ability. All of Captain Ross’ trunks, charts and papers were put on Captain Ransom’s vessel.” – Mr. Claiborne also had a poem, dated 16th Feb 1805 was headed, “To Miss Catharine T. Ross, on the sudden death of her brother who was drowned from an open boat oversetting among the breakers near New York.”
